Government silence... Regarding the phenomenon of re-floating the Assad businessmen, the "money whales," in Syria
Loui Safei, a researcher and political analyst, stated that the talk about re-floating the "money whales" associated with the ousted Assad regime is exaggerated in describing the relationship between them and the current administration.
He denied the existence of indicators indicating the Syrian government's desire to support Assad's men, considering that the main problem lies in the government's silence and lack of media transparency regarding its stance. He added that the issue primarily revolves around the government's attempt to understand the hidden economic structure that formed during Assad's rule, aiming to restore capital for the benefit of the new government.
In a related context, Nader Khalil pointed out that the legacy of corruption left by the Assad regime, represented in the economy of businessmen, constitutes one of the most difficult challenges facing the Syrian government. He explained that unravelling this system requires negotiations with figures linked to corruption.
He also noted that settlement and re-floating operations bring the "former whales" back into the market in exchange for some concessions, without full accountability. This situation hinders the emergence of new elites within society and strengthens the influence of these men through their alliances with military forces, as reported by "Oun Baladi."
